Worlds Collide
So, at the risk of alienating those of you who pay attention to this blog because you “enjoy” my comics & illustration work (all 5 of you - hi, how are ya?), I also occasionally play guitar in a rock band. Despite being in said band, I spend far more of my leisure audio hours listening to podcasts than I do to music, rock or otherwise. So, I figured- why not shove the two...

The Giving of Thanks
Always thrilled and honored when I get an email from the folks at Kickstarter, so when they asked me to share a Thanksgiving memory and / or sketch with them for their blog, I drew the above.  Read the whole blog post HERE if you like, and have a happy Thanksgiving, everybody!

The King of Con
King Con this past weekend was lots of fun. Thanks to everyone who came by my table and said hello. And thanks to Fred Chao for being a great tablemate.  Above is a canine con-goer, well-dressed in a copy of my book The Aviary. I did a bunch of cheap sketches and commissions for people, and of course forgot to document them, but I did take a quick iPhone photo of my favorite. Here’s a...

3 Awesome Ways You Can Spend Some Money:
1. On my KICKSTARTER PROJECT, ending very soon now (as of this writing there are just 60 hours to go). Lots of cheap art & comics you can buy, plus you can follow along as I finish my new book. After this project’s funding period ends, the only way to read the book will be if / when it’s published - won’t be until next year at the earliest, so do a little shopping here if...

WatchWatch
Just found this on Vimeo - video of most of the Kickstarter panel from NY Comic-Con a couple weeks ago. Fun & interesting stuff, I say. I recall seeing a few people with video cameras during the panel, and now here’s a video. Gotta love that internet, yes? Yes.

HOW
Smart dudes tell you HOW: Frank Chimero - How to Have an Idea Kevin Huizenga - How Things Go Not-so-smart dude (ME) tells you HOW: How To Make Drawing Comics Take a Really Long Time: 1. Include lots of increasingly complex panels, like so: 2. Draw more and more of these panels over the course of 60-plus pages. (Note: This is in no way a complaint. I really enjoy drawing this sort of...

THE SQUID
Last fall, when I ran my first Kickstarter project, the fine folks at said website were kind enough to interview me. To accompany the interview, I drew a short comic story called The Squid. Here it is in progress on my drawing table: For some reason, I never quite got around to putting the comic up on my own website, so this morning, I added a little bit of color and rectified this...

““I love mysteries. To fall into a mystery and its danger …...”
– - David Lynch, on mystery. Included these quotes (from the excellent Lynch on Lynch) in my most recent Kickstarter update, thinking about the last part of my new book in progress, and about the kind of stories I’m drawn to / tend to make. Want to read that new book I’m working on? Well,...

Kickstarter Panel at NY Comic Con →
This weekend! Should be fun, and hopefully I won’t say anything too dumb… kickstarter: This weekend, Kickstarter is heading to New York Comic Con! Our panel is Sunday, Oct. 10th from 3:45pm-4:45pm, where we’ll be joined by some amazing creators, including Jamie Tanner (Aviary, The Black Well), Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky (Indie Game: The Movie), and Justin Rivers and Courtney...

Everything Old is New Again
Hi folks - lots of news around these parts, so let’s dive on in: A New Kickstarter Project! Want to read my new graphic novel-in-progress THE BLACK WELL, and get inexpensive comics & art in return? Here’s how! My first experience with Kickstarter has been really incredible, so I’m sort of re-opening the project for the next 30 days. You can see a preview of the book RIGHT...

Current frame of mind:
In the midst of attempting to write the final third of my new book. “Writer’s Block” wouldn’t be accurate (no lack of ideas - too many, if anything). Is “Cartoonist’s Catatonia” a thing? Maybe it should be. Artist’s rendering of said state above.

Mini Matters
Realized fairly last-minute that I would indeed be going to this year’s SPX (probably my favorite comic con) after having missed the last two. This week I whipped up a new minicomic to take with me - an unusually productive form of procrastinating (I really should have spent more of that time writing the last section of my new book (as I should be doing right now, come to think of it)). So...

2 OUT OF 3
Which, as we learned from our friend Meat Loaf, “ain’t bad”. Above, the first two (of 3, hence this post’s title (duh)) parts of my new book The Black Well, still in progress… Here are a couple of panels:

Gettin' Busy (No, not like that)
Quiet ‘round here lately, as I’ve been busy doing mostly these 2 things: 1. Freelancing at my old job, doing apparel graphics.  This sort of thing: 2. Pencilling the next section of my new book.  This sort of thing: So, focusing on finer details like (in case #1) adjusting the curves of a tiny vector frog or (in case #2) figuring out how a body should hold its own severed head...

Accidentally Enjoyable Drawings:
In the midst of working on an update to my Kickstarter project, looking over the tiny, extra-sloppy thumbnail breakdown I just finished for Part 2 of my new comic in progress, The Black Well.  My thumbnails aren’t really meant for public consumption, just for my own problem solving, whether it be compositions, pacing, or what have you.  But sometimes drawing so much smaller and looser...
